Skincare Myths for Problem Skin That You Shouldn't Believe

While consumers' skin care routines vary to some extent, certain basic principles have been tacitly established and are considered mandatory and applicable to everyone.

Cleansing is a must! Treat pimples with harsh lotions! Don't use oils on oily skin! These are just a few of the popular guidelines we're expected to follow.

BUT HOW WOULD YOU REACT IF WE TOLD YOU THAT THESE SO-CALLED RULES ARE WRONG?

Check out 5 of the commonly accepted rules that are completely wrong…

MYTH 1: You should wash your face in the morning.

Washing your face is the first step in most people’s morning routine. But in reality, there’s no need to use a face wash or foam if you’ve thoroughly cleansed your face the night before bed. The golden rule is that you must remove your makeup and impurities in the evening and moisturize your skin. If you do this, in the morning you can simply cleanse your face with a toner or a light micellar water. However, if your skin feels oily in the morning or you can still feel the product you applied the night before, we recommend using light creams instead of harsh facial cleansers in the morning to achieve that squeaky-clean feeling. Excessive face washing with products containing harsh synthetic ingredients leads to dryness, disrupts the lipid barrier, and compromises the skin’s protective functions.

TIP:Toprepare your skin for your daytime skincare routine, cleanse your face in the morning with a mild toner or micellar water using a cotton pad.

MYTH 2: If you have problem skin, use harsh cleansing gels or toners

When you have pimples and inflammation, it may seem logical to dry them out with a strong, aggressive treatment.

Acne-prone skin is inflamed and has an imbalanced pH level. That is precisely why we should not apply acids or alcohol to irritated skin; instead, we should use gentle products.

In addition, excessive washing with foaming products that have a high pH and contain sulfates stimulates excess sebum production, which promotes the growth of pathogenic bacteria and increases inflammation, thereby hindering the skin’s ability to heal.

TIP:Look formild, natural cleansing gels and toners that are gentle on your skin. Probiotic products not only cleanse the skin but also restore its pH balance, preventing the growth of pathogenic bacteria and the onset of inflammation.

MYTH 3: Don't use oils if you have oily or acne-prone skin.

Logically, if you have oily skin, the last thing you want to do is add more oil to it. WRONG!!

Oily skin can be caused by various factors, including stress, diet, and dehydration. Our skin is designed to produce sebum, which provides its natural hydration and lubrication. Along with a balanced skin microbiome, it also plays a key role in the skin’s natural defense mechanisms.

When you use harsh cleansers, they remove this layer. The skin then sends signals to the sebaceous glands to produce even more sebum.

TIP:Usinglight oils such as squalane and macadamia oil can have the opposite effect, because the skin perceives itself as hydrated and in a normal, balanced state.

MYTH 4: Blackheads and pimples can be removed by squeezing them.

Blackheads form when sebum—which keeps the skin hydrated through the pores—oxidizes and turns into a blackhead. When you squeeze a blackhead, some of the oil comes out, but some of it gets pushed back into the epidermis. This causes inflammation and can often force bacteria into the skin’s epidermis—a perfect environment for pimples to develop.

TIP:The bestway to get rid of pimples is through exfoliation or by using products that balance the skin's microbiome and sebum production.

MYTH 5: If a product stings or causes pain, it means it's working.

Some products have to cause pain to work, right? NO. Your skin is most likely reacting to this product, and you should stop using it.

Skin is complex and delicate in different ways, and not every product is suitable for every skin type. If something irritates the skin, it definitely does more harm than good.
