The use of probiotics dates back to the 20th century. The World Health Organization defines them as live microorganisms that improve health when used in the correct concentration (1).
Their use is primarily aimed at improving gastrointestinal function (2), but in recent years they have also been successfully used to improve skin conditions such as acne, atopic dermatitis, rosacea, and others. These therapies are based on a number of studies showing that probiotics are also beneficial for the skin. As a result, probiotics have become one of the key ingredients in certain creams, lotions, and toothpastes (3). The most commonly used ingredients are the lactic acid bacterium Lactobacillus, bacterial metabolites such as hyaluronic acid and lactic acid, and prebiotics— sugars and fibers—to nourish the beneficial bacteria. These are used to treat skin conditions, improve oral hygiene, and as anti-aging products. Probiotics also help accelerate skin epithelialization in cases of burns and scars, improve local skin immunity, and provide protection against ultraviolet rays (2). A large number of studies show that they are highly beneficial in the treatment of atopic dermatitis when taken orally (3).
Factors that lead to an imbalance in the skin microbiome include age, lifestyle, the use of various cosmetic products containing harmful synthetic ingredients, and the specific characteristics of different anatomical skin regions (4).
The condition most commonly affected by changes in the composition and balance of the skin microbiome is acne. Acne affects 80% of adolescents (5, 6) and persists in 20% of them for life. Changes in lipid components and the proliferation of the bacterium Propionibacterium acnes are the primary causes of acne.
In my practice, I always try to first use a treatment that is gentle on the young body, one that restores the skin’s balance and helps it cope with the problem. Most well-known therapies have an antibacterial effect or are aimed at reducing sebum production, and both approaches lead to a change in the composition of the microbiome and a weakening of its protective functions.
Thanks to new technologies and research, SNOWBORN SKINBIOTICS has now been developed — a line of acne treatment cosmetics that is 99% natural and contains probiotics, prebiotics, postbiotics, proteins, and peptides. The probiotics contained in the products are Lactobacillus and Bifidus cultures, which are designed to support the growth of beneficial bacteria and suppress pathogenic strains. They have been proven to improve skin hydration and help maintain its normal pH. Clinical tests show up to 70% effectiveness in just 4 weeks.
